It was announced last Thursday, December 11, that WordPress 2.7 has finally been released to the wild. This is by and large a feature release and has nothing to do with bug fixes and the like. Anyone using WordPress will immediately notice a huge difference in the administrative area.
Rather than try to explain everything in detail here, I’m going to highlight a couple of my favorite features, then give you a video that goes into detail on the interface if you’re interested. If you’re like me, however, you’ll just download it and dig right in.
Before I list the features I like, I’ll say that I downloaded and upgraded my two 2.6.5 installations with ease. I just made sure all of my plugins were up to date and everything else went perfectly smooth.
Now for those features…
- The interface simply looks more smooth, fluid and is more aesthetically pleasing and intuitive than previous versions.
- Administrative screens are customizable. On the dashboard itself, you can drag boxes around and sort them to your liking. Most other screens can be customized as well, but I won’t go into those details here. Just click the “Screen Options” drop-down box in the upper right of the screen and see for yourself!
- Oh..I can’t leave out my most favorite. With version 2.7 comes the ability to upgrade your WordPress installation automatically. That’s right, no more manually downloading the entire tarball and copying files to your website folder.
For the rest, here’s the video I promised.
