iPhone OS 3.0 Previewed Today

The news has been all over the Internet for the past week or so that Apple will be previewing iPhone OS 3.0 today, March 17, 2009. Rumors abound regarding what this new version will bring to the iPhone – everything from cut & paste, to apps running in the background, to Google’s ‘Latitude‘ being included in the maps app.

I’m anxious to see what will be included as well, and hopefully we’ll get some real information from Apple today.

Engadget will be at the preview event and will be updating this page live. Taken from their page, the times the event will be taking place is as follows:

07:00AM – Hawaii
10:00AM – Pacific
11:00AM – Mountain
12:00PM – Central
01:00PM – Eastern
05:00PM – London
06:00PM – Paris
02:00AM – Tokyo (March 18th)

– UPDATE –

Here is my list of features that Apple is including in iPhone OS 3.0 (as parsed from engadget’s live blog entry):

For developers:

  • In-app purchases (purchase new levels, or new content for different apps)
  • Peer connectivity – interactive, multiplayer games can benefit, or share a contact
  • Developers can talk to their own hardware via the dock connector or bluetooth
  • Maps – Developers can incorporate maps in their own apps using the new API. Core location is also being enabled for apps to use turn-by-turn directions.
  • Push technology. Meebo is creating a native iPhone app that utilizes this.
  • Streaming audio & video

For customers:

  • Cut, copy & paste. (Wow, it’s about time.)
  • Landscape mode for all ‘key’ apps – this includes the landscape (wider) keyboard.
  • MMS
  • Voice Memos
  • Search for all key apps
  • Spotlight – To search everything from one screen

The developer beta is available starting today, and the rest of us can get our hands on it this Summer.
