Fortune Magazine reports that Microsoft has finally decided to make the move to offer their Office suite as an online application. Products like Google Apps have been dominating the online document market for a while now, and Microsoft wants in on it.
They’re being careful not to shoot themselves in the foot by offering a slimmed down version with fewer features than the full desktop version of the suite.
The cool thing is that Microsoft isn’t locking down access to only Internet Explorer. It will also work with Firefox and Safari. I’m curious if there will be even fewer features for users of those browsers – I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Details are sketchy as to exactly which features will be included, but my guess is that they will be comparable if not identical to other online office applications.
